Does this sound familiar?

Feeling pressured and stressed is normal for me.

Riding isn’t as much fun, it feels like work.

Do exactly as the trainer says, but feel like I'm always doing something wrong.

Focus on perfecting position but always feel stiff and "fixed."

My horse isn't happy and responsive.

You often get frustrated and discouraged.

Your  aren't making as much progress as the time put into lessons.

You feel disconnected from your horses.

I know why you feel this way......

You're cut off from communicating with your horse and yourself because you are constantly focused on improving your position and technique. This traditional training model is done with best of intentions; after all, trainers want their students to succeed!

What's missing in this traditional approach to teaching? Supporting the development of good mental skills, creating a  positive, growth mindset in riders. This stress relief shifts the focus from a one-size fits all approach and seeking perfection to growing curiosity and putting the needs of the horse first. The top riders and trainers with the most success do this. They work on mental skills as well as physical and riding skills. They also take the “me” out of the equation when they are riding. They understand that they are half of a team, and they listen to and respect the needs of their horses.

"I am changing the mindset of the horse industry, one rider, one trainer and one horse at a time."

St. Lawrence Stables was proud to host Lisa Eklund this past weekend for a clinic on Mindfulness while riding. Her teaching on breath work, body scan, deep connection between horse/rider, mindful riding and more created major “ah-ha” moments for each rider and auditor during their time with Lisa on Saturday. Our riders now have new tools in their tool box to use while riding at home and in competition, and a new outlook on their time in the saddle. What a great day of barn friends, excellent conversations and new learning! We highly recommend her to every discipline of riding!

Are you ready to change the way you learn?

You can choose from three different types of lessons........

Riders

Become more aware of yourself and your horse in the moment.

Give yourself the space to make mistakes and learn from them.

Take in what you learn and apply it anytime you ride.

Feel freedom and confidence because you're improving AND enjoying the way you ride.

Develop feel and connection with your horse

By signing up with the program, I was hoping to become more present and aware with my riding and with my horse. I was hopeful to work on not being such a perfectionist and accepting where we were at, in peace. I feel I have gained a better acceptance for being where I am at with my horse. I don't feel that intense stress or pressure to be perfect and honestly, I am able to enjoy my time at the barn and riding so much more. I also loved your guidance and teachings about becoming more aware and present in life and in my riding! I was able to apply many of Lisa's teachings about riding and mindfulness to my day to day and what a big help! I honestly feel like this work could benefit anyone who is struggling at enjoying their time with their horse, whether that be due to anxiety, show pressure or anything in between. Lisa's teachings go so much further than ones relationship with the horse and helps us humans turn in to ourselves to find the solution to most all of our 'issues'.

Who will this work for?

Riders who want to learn how to look for positive opportunities through every moment, even mistakes and failure.

Riders who are seeking a better way.

Riders who want to learn how to open up communication between mind, body, and horse to improve connection and feel.

It isn't always about the position, the techniques, or the use of aids.
As an instructor who has 40+ years training all levels of riders, I understand why most equestrians focus on these traditional ideas.

I did for a time as well.

But I found that I would still encounter students who didn't make progress, who couldn't get over their fears, or who couldn't seem to "get past" a certain level despite our best efforts. Enough so that it made me question how I was doing things; was it the "right" way? Or was I missing some key element? These questions were always in the back of mind.

I ended up going through some major life upsets.

I had to really slow down, look inside myself for the strength to move forward, and make changes to my life. One of the ways I changed my life was through the discovery of mindfulness and meditation.  I developed the mindset skills to work with my struggles, learn from them and come out the other side a stronger person.

My mindful training also changed the way I thought about teaching and riding.

I realized the trend in the industry to focus on position, technique, and a cookie cutter approach to riding  does a disservice to trainers, riders and horses. Teaching and training really needs to be individualized for each rider, each trainer and each horse, addressing emotional and mindset needs. This encourages the creation of a healthy positive, growth mindset that shifts the focus from following a one size fits all approach that seeks perfection to growing curiosity, openess and relaxation, where the needs of the horses as unique individuals come first.

Imagine what it would feel like to ride that way!

I remember telling Lisa that I thought I was doing pretty well for an old lady beginner. Her comment was keep your cup half full. Her comment really perplexed me as I thought I was being positive about my progress. It finally dawned on me that my comment was passive aggressive cup half empty. This was a turning point. No need to compare myself to others. I needed to stop making excuses about my (lack of) riding skills. I now focus more on what is getting better and on what I am actually learning. When something doesn’t go right I use it to learn from instead of put myself down. This results in less stress (mentally and physically) and a lot more fun as I learn to ride AND in everyday life. Concrete results- I see the progress in myself and my horse and continue to have a blast! On the days when things aren’t going well, or there is a frustration, feelings of doubt, I remind myself, “cup half full” which keeps me from falling into a funk of hopelessness and/or failure. I am more relaxed, less self-conscious, laugh more and am a much happier rider person. Thanks Lisa!

FAQ

  • Do you have to be a certain skill level or ride a specific discipline to take a lesson?
It is best that you are at least an advanced beginner who can at least trot alone comfortably with the capability of doing different exercises including going over poles on the ground. I am comfortable working with most disciplines, though hunters and jumpers are my specialty.
  • Do I have to have Wi-Fi service to do a lesson?
No, Wi-Fi is great if you have it but you can use your cellular service. But be sure you have enough data to do so. If neither Wi-Fi or cell service is not possible. You can submit a 20-minute video that will be reviewed by Lisa in a 45 minute Zoom meeting with you.
  • What if I have wifi/connection issues that happen during the lesson?
We can reschedule if it is impossiblle to continue. It is possible to switch to video review lessons if you have continuing issues.
  • Are the lessons recorded?
I can record Zoom lessons if you ask me to do so as we start the lesson. If you use PIVO you are the one in charge of the video.
  • What if I have questions or need help between lessons?
I can be contacted by email. There are two follow up emails you can use with each lesson if you need to ask a question.

My main problem is self-confidence. The feeling that I can always do better, and need to make things perfect. Also, I have anxiety when riding my leased horse in the winter/spring, when he is more “exuberant”, versus during the summer/fall when he is an angel (for the most part). I began to focus on the good or positive things and not zero in on the negative. Learned to take a deep breath and slow everything down, in order to change negative outcomes, or make them less negative (if that makes sense) . My riding has become much better, and my outlook in general. There are times I find myself using some of your techniques on others that are having a negative/depressed moment. (Think about the good things, etc.) This program would work for all types of people. It’s interesting to see how others work through their struggles each in their own way. We may all have a similar struggle, but we work through it in a different way, and that’s ok.
